How to layer clothes for autumn

With temperatures dropping, but still the odd day of warmth after a frosty morning, it’s time to learn to layer up. Choosing pieces that can be worn alone or layered is the key to transitional seasonal dressing. It’s also the perfect excuse to delay packing away your favourite summer dresses and skirts!

We’ll show you how to create autumn outfits for all weathers. Combining wardrobe staples and new essentials, here are our top tips for autumn clothes layering.

Cardigan and jacket combination

The humble cardigan should be a mainstay of everyone’s wardrobe and come autumn it will be one of the hardest working pieces you own. When choosing autumn clothes for layering, you’ll want to avoid heavy or chunky knit cardigans and instead opt for a thin cardigan that can be layered underneath a light jacket.

We love mixing colours and patterns for this look to add interest and individual style. For a more polished feel, opt for neutral tones like a white or grey cardigan with a camel or black coat.

If you’re looking to make more of a splash, why not combine pops of colour with a bright cardigan in red or pink and throw on a jacket in khaki green or navy blue? Wearing a darker colour over a brighter one helps make the contrast greater and is a great way to inject brightness on a dark autumn day.

Double up on jumpers

On those dry, crisp autumnal days – when sunglasses and a hat are a must – ditch the coat and instead double up on knitwear. A chic way to layer, knitwear is a staple of autumn outfits.

We love pairing a rollneck underneath an oversized V-neck jumper. You could even raid your partner’s wardrobe for that oversized feel. You can play with the silhouette by tucking the jumpers in at different points or adding a belt to cinch in the waist.

Don’t be afraid to mix and match colours and patterns for a truly tailored look. For that final stroke of style, why not add a chunky necklace?

Combine shirts and summer dresses

Get extra wear out of your summer dresses by wearing them with a shirt, transforming beach dresses to boardroom-ready in minutes.

Add a shirt underneath floaty, sleeveless summer dresses for a modern take on traditional workwear. For dresses with short sleeves, wear your shirt over the top and tie at the waist to create the illusion of a shirt and skirt.

For a modern autumn outfit idea, try clashing prints. We love combing floral prints with spots and animal prints with stripes. If you prefer a more subtle look, why not throw on a plain button-down in a sumptuous jewel tone or keep it simple in a black or white shirt?

On warmer days, keep your legs bare and wear your favourite white trainers. We love this laid-back sporty vibe, which can instantly make a dressy outfit look more casual. Come wetter, wintery days, we love popping on a pair of thick tights with 70s-inspired knee-high boots.

Throw on a scarf

Instantly add a layer of cosiness with an oversized blanket scarf – the ultimate transitional layer. Discover the myriad ways your oversized scarf can be worn and have fun creating new autumn outfits with just one item.

Throw it on over your favourite chunky knit for crisp autumn walks. For evenings out, wrap it around you like a cosy shawl. Enjoying a weekend in the city? Dress up your oversized blanket scarf by draping it around your shoulders and adding a buckle belt over a slip skirt for a truly modern evening look.

Chunky socks and ankle boots

One of our favourite pieces of footwear for autumn is the humble ankle boot. Available in a whole host of styles, they can be worn with everything from jeans and smart trousers to skirts and dresses.

This season, we’re pairing our ankle boots with a pair of chunky socks to keep those toes cosy all day. If you’re wearing tailored trousers or going to an evening do, luxe up the look with a pair of sparkly socks.
