How to save (at least) an hour every day

There’s a lot going on right now and it can feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day to get everything done. But what would you do if you had an extra hour every day? If it were possible to save 60 whole minutes, how would you spend your time?

Maybe you’d watch that TV show you’ve been meaning to catch up on. Perhaps you’d book in a Pilates class or have a call with a friend.

So, is it possible to find the time to do what you enjoy the most? Below, you’ll find some handy time-saving tips that show you how to save an hour every day by shaving precious minutes off those everyday tasks.

Make breakfast in the evening

Time saved: 5 minutes

While you’re making dinner in the evening, set aside some time while your meal cooks to prepare your breakfast for the following morning. This works especially well if you enjoy overnight oats or a fruity smoothie for your first food of the day.

Overnight oats have become a growing breakfast trend in recent years, largely thanks to their health benefits. They’re packed with fibre and protein, along with vitamins and minerals that provide valuable fuel for the day ahead. By prepping them the night before, you’ll not only save time in the morning, but you’re allowing the oats to soak up the milk, water or yoghurt.

Should you enjoy a smoothie to give you a morning boost, chop the ingredients the night before. All you’ll need to do in the morning is quickly blend everything and serve.

Hang your clothes in sections

Time saved: 5 minutes

Set aside some time to rearrange your wardrobe as this can save you valuable minutes later on. Lay out your items of clothing in categories on the floor or on your bed. These will become the sections that you use to hang them in, so it’s worth making defined categories at this stage.

Have a section for your skirts, shirts, tops, trousers, knitwear and any other clothing you’d like to categorise. Then, when you’re ready, hang them in an order that works for you and makes things easy to find in the morning.

Create a capsule wardrobe

Time saved: 5 minutes

If you have key pieces that go with everything, getting dressed will take no time at all. Create your capsule wardrobe by clearing out anything that doesn’t fit or that you don’t wear anymore. Be firm about what can stay and what can go.

From there, invest in the essentials. Start with a versatile pair of jeans that can be dressed up or down and make sure you have smart trousers in a good base colour, such as black, navy or grey. Add shirts, white tees and some tops that can be easily mixed and matched with the jeans and trousers. A pair of ankle boots and trainers are also key to rounding off these outfits.

By having these staples ready to go, you should be able to get an outfit together quickly and easily. You can save even more time by laying out your outfit the night before.

Pre-sort the laundry

Time saved: 5 minutes

Doing the laundry can be hugely time consuming, especially if you have a few loads to sort through. To save time, rethink how you organise the washing by opting for baskets that include different compartments for different items of clothing.

Alternatively, buy different coloured laundry baskets that allow your household to separate their washing as they go. You could have one for socks and underwear, another for towels and another for everyday clothes and so on. By designating specific colours in this way, it can make it easier to sort through each load – and save time in the process.

Invest in multitasking make-up

Time saved: 10 minutes

If it’s been a while since you updated your make-up bag, now could be the perfect opportunity. It’s likely that you’ll have separate products that take time to apply in order. However, if you swap some of your current line-up for products that do two jobs in one, you’ll find that you free up minutes that you don’t usually have.

For instance, if you usually like to apply some fake tan, try adding tan drops to your moisturiser to skip out the longer application stage. Similarly, a good quality concealer can be the perfect replacement for all-over foundation, especially if you’re only trying to cover up certain areas. Also, double up on your blusher and lip colour with a dual-acting lip and cheek rouge.

Skip the shampoo

Time saved: 30 minutes

Do you wash, dry and style your hair every morning? If so, you’ll know that it can take time to get it to fall just as you like it. However, if you skip the washing stage for a high-quality dry shampoo every other day, you’ll soon find that this is a key time-saving trick.

If you have a fringe, try giving it a quick rinse and blow dry to refresh it, then tie your hair up to give yourself a freshly washed look in no time at all.

It’s worth trying all of these time-saving tips to free up an hour in your day for yourself. Even if you want to use that to indulge in an early bedtime, you’ll soon find that you have a whole hour to do what you enjoy. If you do want to hop into bed a little earlier, shop our nightwear online for something cosy.
