May half-term activities you can do with the grandchildren

May half-term activities you can do with the grandchildren

From castles to coastlines, picnics in the park to outdoor adventures, we understand that keeping little ones entertained can be exhausting, especially during the holidays! If you’re a grandparent who’s in charge this May half-term, we’re here to provide you with some activity inspiration and the wardrobe essentials to help make you feel comfortable, confident and cool!

Visit a stately home

Combine culture with the great outdoors in a visit to a stately home for a fun, yet educational day out in the UK. With hundreds of stately homes and gardens open to the public in the UK, there’s no shortage of places to visit.

From medieval manors to Palladian palaces, historic halls to creepy castles, many properties feature sprawling parklands to run, jump and hide in. You may also find that a day out in a historic setting sparks your little one’s interest in history, architecture, or maybe landscape gardening. Dress for the occasion in comfy trainers from our Amortyl range. With arch support and a sturdy sole, they’re the perfect choice for a day of exploring. Pair with your favourite jeans and cardigan for a relaxed feel. If the May sun is shining, wear your cool white trainers with one of our vibrant pleated midi skirts.

Head to the beach

Is it even a holiday without a trip to the coast? With hidden coves, quaint seaside charm, golden sands, and even a seal or two, there are plenty of beautiful beaches to choose from this May half-term. Promenade along the front, build sandcastles by the shore and eat fish and chips on the pier for a truly quintessential British day out.

Of course, it won’t be a day beside the seaside without the threat of rain, so pack a parka just in case. Our collection of parkas and raincoats is ideal for unpredictable ‘summer’ weather. We love a bright colour for the warmer months, and our lightweight coat available in a selection of pastel hues fits the bill!

Go on a train ride

If you’ve got little(ish) grandchildren and you’re looking for a cheap day out in the UK, take a train journey. Train rides are an exciting activity in themselves – the destination doesn’t really matter! Grab yourself a seat with a table and set up a mini picnic and watch the world go by. Play eye-spy out the window and take pictures of the surrounding landscapes. A cosy jumper or a relaxed cardigan is a great thin layer for a train journey. Choose a classic stripe with a pair of high-waisted tailored trousers for a chic Parisian silhouette, or opt for a longline cardigan and throw it on over a casual midi-dress for a laidback look.

Bake a cake

Make precious memories and pass on a family recipe by baking together. Play your favourite songs and bake delicious, sweet treats this May half-term. You can’t beat a classic Victoria sponge with fresh strawberries or delicious scones with jam and cream.

If the sun is out, grab a blanket, set up a teddy bear picnic outside and enjoy your freshly baked goods in the open air!

Create a veg patch

Creating a veg patch is a perfect half-term activity to while away the hours! Head to the local garden centre and pick the fruits and vegetables you want to grow. Every time the children come to stay with you over the summer, they can tend to their plants.

Come harvest time around August and September, you can reap what you’ve sown. If you’ve managed to grow a decent crop, you can head to the kitchen to create a special dish with your home-grown goodies.

Whilst most vegetables grow best in a sunny spot, lettuce, peas, or spinach are happy in a shady space. But be sure to wear a fleece whilst you’re planting to keep the chill off your back. A full zip fleece is the ideal gardening companion, whilst a fleece gilet is perfect if you live in slightly warmer climes.

Read a favourite childhood book

From Peter Pan to The Secret Garden, The Little Princess to Elma the Elephant, reading a favourite childhood book after a busy day of activities is a thoughtful and calm way to end the day.

Why not read them a book that you read to their mum or dad to bring back all those special memories? After a busy May half-term, cosy up in one of our loungewear sets and snuggle up on the sofa. Made from soft, stretchy fabrics, they’re perfect for cuddling up together and getting comfy before bed.
