The Damart Book Club: What to read this season

As the nights draw in and the temperatures begin to plummet, snuggling up with a good book is the perfect way to while away the hours. Whether you’re a fan of a paperback or you’re a Kindle convert, we’ve got some of autumn’s best books to read.

Shooting Martha by David Thewlis

Are you looking for some dark humour this autumn? If so, this new book from David Thewlis is the ideal read before bedtime. Get cosy in your favourite pyjamas and curl up with this tale by actor-turned-novelist David Thewlis. Here, we follow a famous director as he attempts to finish his latest film while grieving for his late wife. He tries to bring her back to life through his work to overcome the loss, leading the people in his world to strange and troubling places.

Damart says: Shooting Martha is beautifully compelling and darkly funny. The perfect read for a wet autumn day. Reminiscent of a Hitchcock drama, we guarantee you’ll be hooked.

Ascension by Oliver Harris

We’re still dreaming of white sandy beaches and warm summer sun, and while Oliver Harris’ latest thriller is set on the sandy shores of Ascension Island, there’s not a whole lot of sunbathing going on. Featuring MI5 spies, the disappearance of a young girl, and an island full of secrets, this novel is a fascinating tale of modern espionage.

In typical Harris style, this is a sleek and gripping thriller that will be devoured over a weekend. Grab your favourite snuggly blanket and hunker down as you’re transported to the other side of the world with this stunning novel.

Damart says: A modern-day thriller with a tropical backdrop – what’s not to love?! Cleverly constructed and beautifully written, we’re on tenterhooks to discover what the future holds for the protagonists Elliot Kane and Kathryn Taylor.

1979 by Val McDermid

The indomitable Val McDermid is back with a breath-taking thriller in a brand-new, heart-racing series. Set in 1979, reporter Allie Burns is chasing her first scoop – desperate to break through the boys’ club mentality that’s rife. A woman in a man’s world, Burns will do anything to get the story – but at what cost? McDermid is renowned for producing some of the best books to read in crime fiction and this new series won’t disappoint.

Damart says: We were obsessed with the straight-talking Vera, and now we have a new heroine to worship. This is the start of another compelling series and we can’t wait to see where McDermid takes Allie Burns – fingers crossed for a TV drama series!

Two Hundred Years of Muddling Through by Duncan Weldon

If coffee table books are more your thing, Two Hundred Years of Muddling Through by The Economist writer Duncan Weldon is for you. Telling the story of how Britain’s economy and politics have interacted from the time of the Industrial Revolution right up to the pandemic of 2020, it’s the perfect fodder for dinner parties.

This book will provide you with insightful musings around the dinner table. So, what are you waiting for? Pair your favourite metallic pleated skirt with a roll neck jumper for a sleek and sophisticated dinner party outfit and entertain friends and family with your sparkling wit and delicious dishes.

Damart says: Wonderfully insightful and easy to follow, Weldon’s narrative is pitch-perfect and succinctly sums up Britain. It’s the perfect book to dip in and out of when you’ve got five minutes to put your feet up with a cuppa.

The Man Who Died Twice by Richard Osman

The hotly anticipated second book in The Thursday Murder Club series won’t disappoint. With plenty of laugh-out-loud and heartwarming moments, it’s another modern-day whodunnit. The septuagenarians are back to their sleuthing ways, but as the bodies start to pile up can they find the killer before the killer finds them?

Following the success of the first book in The Thursday Murder Club collection, Osman’s second book is just as wonderful. Find your favourite cosy corner, sling on a cardigan and see if you can solve the mystery before the quartet.

Damart says: Even better than the first book! We loved every single page as we learn more about the characters. Charming, funny, thrilling, and quintessentially British. We can’t wait for the next instalment.

Beautiful World, Where Are You by Sally Rooney

Did you watch Normal People last year? If you did, you made up one of the 62 million streams of the dramatisation of Sally Rooney’s 2018 novel. Adults of all ages were drawn to the world of Marianne and Connell. Now, the Irish author follows this up with a new book about Alice, Felix, Eileen and Simon as they navigate tricky relationships and the world they live in.

The perfect book for a Sunday afternoon. Pop on your comfiest trousers, we especially love our loose-fitting tie-waist ones, and get cosy on the sofa.

Damart says: We adored Normal People and Connell’s chain, so Rooney’s latest novel has been hotly anticipated here at Damart HQ. We loved the will-they-won’t-they aspect that makes this novel easy to devour.

Whether you’re a fan of historical fiction, futuristic thrillers, or stranger-than-fiction autobiographies, there’s a new book out there for everyone this season.
