Cardigans are great items of clothing for both autumn and winter. None too heavy and none too cumbersome, they offer an extra layer of warmth for keeping you cosy while out and about.
With that in mind however, it’s worth taking a note of how to wear them to get the best possible outfit combinations over the coming months.
Wearing a cardigan with a dress
Every now and again we get asked how to pair a cardigan with a dress, as more often than not ladies tend to feel a little frumpy when dress and cardigan are combined.
This doesn’t have to be the case however, as there are a few tips to get you out of a pickle if you need to wear a dress in the cold.
It’s best to consider layering sleeved cardigans over sleeveless dresses to avoid silly lumps on the arms, and layering sleeveless cardigans over sleeved dresses works in just the same way.
Long cardigans are your friends
Long cardigans are brilliant because they work with all kinds of clothes and can also function as perfect accessories for a cool winter look.
If the weather isn’t particularly bothersome, you can look perfectly smooth with a plain t-shirt and skinny jeans; a great little combo that is particularly popular for those in their 20s and 30s. Add a long cardigan into the mix on cooler days.
Long cardigans also go exceedingly well with a higher waist jean and sweaters for the days when it’s a little cold outside.
Also, if you’re thinking about footwear, clogs and flat boots are a perfect match for long cardigans.
Getting a patterned or Aztec cardigan
Over the past couple of winters, patterned (or Aztec) designed cardigans have been at the forefront of winter clothing and it doesn’t look like they’re going anywhere just yet.
One of the many oversized clothing types, they can be a little tricky to perfect.
With that in mind however, don’t wear loose fitting bottoms and stay clear of maxi skirts, as both combined with an Aztec cardigan will end up making you look a little square.
Skinny jeans and leggings fit perfectly with both patterned and oversized cardigans however, and while you’re there, a chunky boot is the perfect finishing touch.
Out and about in a shawl
Let’s face it, shawls are just as great as cardigans, and every woman has her favourite.
They’re also great for that winter layered look, and you can have a fab time playing around with a multitude of different looks.
Whether hung over a cosy polo top, or over a cute winter jumper, shawls are easy to match with, especially if you enjoy experimenting with styles.
For those who don’t want to look too busy however, we recommend a plain shawl, rather than one that is overly dramatic.
Although V-neck cardigans aren’t usually great for dresses, they are absolutely recommended for shawls and can help draw focus around the collarbone for extra elegance.
