Transitional capsule wardrobe

Transitional dressing: A capsule wardrobe to take you into spring

Transitional dressing in spring can be tricky. While it can be a glorious time of the year, it isn’t always easy to know what to wear. Do you put on a knitted layer but risk becoming too hot outside, or dress for the spring sunshine in a light cardigan, only to feel cold when you leave the house?

To help you get to grips with the changing of the seasons and feel comfortable, whatever the weather, we’ve created a winter-to-spring capsule wardrobe for you to cherry pick from.

The basics

There’s usually still a chill in the air on spring mornings. So, if you’re up early and want to head out for a walk before breakfast, you might need to add a layer to keep you warm.

One way to do this is to add a thermal vest. Depending on how much you want to warm up, you can choose either a sleeveless or long-sleeved version that suits the temperature. This will keep the cold at bay and make sure you’re totally comfortable as you stroll around your local park.

Also, if you’re debating on stowing your tights away, you might want to hold off for a little longer. To keep your legs toastie while channelling the warmer season trends, you could wear a pair of tights with your spring dress.

Layering is an essential part of any transitional wardrobe. A simple, lightweight cardigan is a versatile piece that you can easily throw on when you’re feeling chilly on a cool March morning without making you too warm.

Cardigans come in a range of colours and styles, too, so you can mix and match with different outfits accordingly. You might want a short-sleeved one in a vibrant coral shade that adds a pop of colour or you might decide to choose a long-sleeved version in neutral tones such as brown, white, or grey that allow your floral dress or smart trousers to do the talking.

The trousers

Trousers work especially well in the transitional seasons when you’re never too sure when the sun will appear, or the rain will surprise you. Once you’ve selected a pair you like, you’ll probably find that you wear them all the time, taking you right through to the summer months.

Jeans look great in any season, and they’re an easy choice when you’re wondering what to wear in spring. For a comfortable pair that work well in all types of weather, try ankle-grazing stretch denim jeans. These are a versatile addition to your winter-to-spring capsule wardrobe as they can be teamed with ankle boots when it’s cold or wet, and with a pair of flats or trainers on warmer days.

The midi skirt

A skirt is an easy addition to any transitional capsule wardrobe. It forms the perfect base and can be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion.

If it’s a warmer day, you can pop on a go-with-anything midi skirt and add a casual tee and crisp white trainers to add a stylish twist to your daily walk. If it’s a little colder, add tights and ankle boots to make sure you’re ready to head out to face the spring showers.

You can choose a style that suits you, too. So, you might be a fan of a straight pencil skirt or you might keep returning to A-line styles. Select the design that you’re most comfortable with and go for a colour that you’ll want to wear through the season.

A light rain coat

Rain coats are a must in the spring. As well as being water-resistant enough to help you battle the April showers, the right one can seamlessly blend practicality with style, looking great with everything from jeggings to wide leg trousers.

Additionally, they’re a lightweight replacement for your heavy-duty winter coat. Therefore, you can add this layer in the cooler weather and never feel too warm when the sun makes an appearance. Choose a brightly coloured, fully lined raincoat to make sure you’re covered in all weathers and wear this transitional wardrobe staple right through to summer.
